At the age of 18, he followed a course at the "Arts Décoratifs de
Vienne".
At the age of 21, he came to Paris, entered the "Grande Chaumière", first in
the studio of Othon Friesz, than the studio of Lucien Simon (at the "Ecole Nationale
des Beaux-Arts de Paris") where he rubbed shoulders with Brayer, Dries,
Hambourg. From, then on, he described himself as a painter of "l'Ecole de
Montparnasse". He was strongly influenced by Cezanne and Marquet, and concentrated
his work on construction and colour.
His technique is solid, the subject clearly defined, cutting out soft curves, emphasising
straight lines. The function of colour is to be decorative. He cleverly contrasts the warm
colours with the cold colours : a blue is used to show off a red,
a yellow underlines a green...
The subjects he painted : flowers, still life, Normandy harbours and beaches, interiors,
views of Paris...
and others for our delight.
